These two short examples are illustrative before we go to 2018 and the diverging/converging realities.
How would a monkey tell a fish what it is like to climb a tree? For the monkey it is difficult to explain. For the fish problematic to understand. They both live in different worlds. The fish and monkey excel in their own living environment, context and behavior yet can hardly imaging each other’s world because it does not belong to their daily reality. They would even deny each other’s existance.
Then there is the inspirating story of the flatlanders. These are imaginary beings that live in a two dimensional world. In their world there is no up or down, just forward and backward, left and right. How do you explain these flatlanders about the existance of the third dimension in which we can deal with depth and height too? That within these 3D we can find endless amounts of 2D worlds that run parallel and even could cross each other? And that these worlds have no idea about each other’s existance. Each of these flatlanders would also be capable of denying the existance of the other ones.
When we talk about Sustainocracy as societal alternative we also find such perceptions at human level. Sustainocracy is a different reality than what we have been used to for generations and were educated into. Just watch these 10 minutes of James Wildman showing us how we fool ourselves:
Sustainocracy is also a new dimension that has been added to our society. That is new and difficult to understand. It does not require much explanation for those who have made the step already. For those who encounter the ideology and practical reality for the first time, they tend to stay in their old patterns of reasoning. They mirror Sustainocracy against their own known and accustomed way of living. That does not work. Just like a fish will never climb a tree if it keeps swimming in the water.
On the other hand why would an ape want to convince a fish? Or should the 2D world want to understand the 3D reality? That indeed is not at all necessary. Unless one can get clear benefits from the cross over. That is one of the reasons why new realities such as Sustainocracy came about. The current (old) human reality is destroying our habitat, including our relationships among each other and our environment. The consciousness that develops involves “it needs to be done differently”. This is already a step into the direction of a new dimension of connectedness and behavioral adjustment.
The advantage of any human being is our capacity to evolve in awareness (understanding new things) in which new dimensions become visible and challenge our behavior and lifestyle. In essence we can evolve from swimming into climbing trees and learn to manage both. We are also capable of reasoning in 2 and 3 dimensions while opening up our personal and collective evolution towards 4 and 5D consciousness. The human being has unprecedented evolutionary possibilies even during a single lifetime. This also means that certain people advance in this sooner or deeper than others.
That is how the situation arises in which different realities start to appear, diverge and mingle, colliding or strengthing each other. That does not only go for the individual but also for institutions, governance and business enterprises. In 2018 new dimensions and realities manifest themselves structurally (not ad hoc anymore) as optional next to the old one.
In Sustainocracy we position “the human being” and our core natural values at the kernel of our thinking and dealing with reality. It is all about the wellness we create together, our continuity and evolution as a species. Then suddenly different rules count than the current political and economically geared situation that made us dependent of a costly hierarchical structure. For many only this single reality exists because of their dependence on it. “It is as it is”, people state with apathy. With this attitude they reason about everything as soccer player that wants to play basketball by using only soccer rules. That cannot be done of course. It is not as it is, it is the way we interpret our reality and act accordingly. Big challenges such as pollution, deforestation, destruction of life on Earth, inequality, climate change, illnesses, etc get us to think differently. To that understanding belongs new models and behavioral patterns.
2018 stands for new societal structures that at first function next to eachother with engagement of three groups of people and institutions:
- Those that hold on to the political economic reality and their own fragmented role in it,
- Those that structurally engage with level 4 participation (like Sustainocracy), reasoning and dealing from a holistic approach and symbiosis,
- Those that get stuck between the two realities.
This situation we will also encounter during the city council elections in 2018 in which core human values and cocreation have penetrated the political agenda too. An example is the Brabant Health Deal.
More and more citizens group together to take responsibility for their environment and quality of life, looking for partnerships in equality and purpose with the local policy makers. Also the political economic hierarchy has no other choice than to engage in order to avoid liabilities that can be connected to the old governance model. The new reality hence gains momentum.
Still there will be regions in which so called Trump effects can occur due to the conservative capitalists that see their position weaken. The effects are being analyzed by Otto Scharmer (Theory-U) in his recent blog. He sees it all as a prelude needed for the awareness boost that precedes change.
Anyhow, and concluding, the new realities manifest themselves, show what they are about and win engagement through self aware citizens, governors, innovative entrepreneurs and institutions. This gives both tensions and positive flows. But in 2018 for the first time they will stand side by side and fight their differences in an evolutionary battle for our sustainable future. Nature itself will add to it too assuring that it will be another challenging year full of threats and opportunities. How we deal with this duality will determine our own flow.
I myself made my choice already over 20 years ago as a person. In 2009 STIR Foundation was created to host the engagement of people and institutions that wanted to shape the core human values through innovation. And since 2012 it has its own name, framework and common denomination under Sustainocracy, which expresses itself through level 4 movements such as AiREAS, FRE2SH, COS3I and School of Talents in Eindhoven, Brabant, Netherlands, Europe and the entire world. In view of this evolution 2018 will be for me individually and collectively at the side of Sustainocracy, a wonderful year.
With thanks to Laszlo Zsolnai and Ove Jakobsen I was invited to participate in the publication of this valuable book published through Emerald Publishing. My contribution is about the Participation Society, an analysis of the evolution of our societal structures and the emergence of taking responsibility together as citizens and policy makers when dealing with our core human and natural values.

The Indian owner and global societal entrepreneur Dr. Mahendra Shah openly commits to work together with us by combining the best practice of his ZEN Resorts (healing and herb centers) in Bali with our Sustainocracy (core values driven democracy) in Brabant (the Netherlands) or our Global Health Deal of innovative awareness and health driven cocreation. This is what Dr. Shah writes:
I completely agree with the notion sustainocracy as it integrates sustainability of human beings with Democracy (Participatory positive (sustainable) interactions and actions amongst all members of the community-society as well as living in harmony and sustainably with nature.
Today the greatest local, national, regional and global 21st century challenge comprises human health and the pollution-degradation-destruction of nature. Both these aspects are critical consequences due the escalating adoption of modern lifestyles around the world. Modern lifestyles are often characterized by (1) deficient food consumption – nutritionally inadequate, food contamination and eating “on the go”; (2) little time for exercise i.e. balanced physical, psychological and spiritual exercises; (3) Stress at work often in a highly competitive, and uncaring environment focussed on meeting deadline after deadline (4) Stress at home and the family; (5) living in ever more polluted environment. These five factor cocktail is resulting in the increasing burden of ailments and diseases of modern lifestyles such as headaches, backache, blood pressure, mental stress, diabetes etc, for all of which modern medicine prescribes drugs including pills, insulin etc just to maintain health with little hope of curing.
The fundamental challenge is how to make a human being sustainable such that he or she interacts with other human beings enhancing their sustainability and also lives in nature responsibly, ensuring a sustainable environment. Democracy is at the core of sustainable relationships between all members of the community and society
For over four decades the world community has met at countless conferences and summits just formulating and endorsing agenda after agenda for sustainable development (recall 1972 Stockholm, 1992 Rio, 2002 Johannesburg etc) and so often without commitment of actions and resources for implementation. We should learn from the mushrooming technology driven silicon valleys, now in almost every urban center around the world. Let us create sustainability valleys bringing together the doers and practitioners of sustainable development and sustainable healthy human beings.
We need to establish sustainocracy centers in every viable urban and regional setting around the world to enhance sustainable development, sustainable human health and real participatory democracies. We have had a decade of experience at Zen resort Bali helping guests from around the world to experience sustainable lifestyles and adopt health eating, exercise, thinking and living in harmony with each other and with nature.
Thus I am ready and committed to partner and work with you with you towards a “combination of Zen resorts and Sustainocratic regional resilience processes could well be the highly desired evolutionary process for all cities to follow”, including three well documented operational examples, one in Bali, one in India and one in the Netherlands
Whilst it may appear difficult to convince the congregation of the Gemert castle, and also in the case of many such properties of the Vatican, that such entities, initially created for the spiritual, moral and ethical religious welfare of the community, need to be utilized and transformed in the 21st century to meet the emerging challenges of human and natures health and sustainability. There can be no better legacy for the congregation and the Vatican then seeing their historical properties utilized to enhance human health and education towards sustainable living. Governments also have a role to support such initiatives with policy and resources as in the long run a healthy society reduces the burdens of healthcare, which are escalating in this era of modern lifestyles. Such properties were created for genuine societal wellbeing and they should not become only an instrument of economic gain.
Yes let us partner up as consortium that has its own ideology (Wellness Continuum, https://marktleiderschap.wordpress.com/2016/12/18/whitepaper-wellness-continuum/), methods (Zen resorts and Sustainocratic healing of regional communities) and mobilize funding and implement.

You may have witnessed the recent explosive disentanglement of masculine and feminine energy within me and my surroundings. Did it occur to you too? For me it was a brief, very confronting, highly emotional but necessary period in time that comprised exactly 7 x 7.7 = 54 days, precizely between three full moons. I am at peace for along time already with the understanding that whatever happens to me is a miniature prelude of what humankind can expect on a macro scale. In a sense it prepares me and my awareness to be of some kind of use by the time this is needed. Meanwhile I conduct my daily activities with the development of our sustainocratic groups within the City of Tomorrow concept of wellness driven cocreation. As such a new energetic field has emerged around me and is affecting me and everything that our Global STIR community does. I sense it as the emergence of Divine Femininity.
Equality man and woman
As single dad with two daughters the adult man/woman combination was fixed in me as a single identity. I was in harmony (see picture) with myself and my two children, both feminine. The masculine part of me had to structure the household, protect the family from the political economic aggressions, take care of an income, etc. The feminine part in me was caring about the growing up and wellness of my two daughters. In essence this is what our current society feels like too. Masculinety and femininity unified in a dominant masculine structure. Our political economy of hierarchies and dependence is highly masculine while the expensive care and repair system is a masculine version of feminity. Just like in my case there seems to be an unnatural kind of harmony that is about to be messed up.
Here is a short reflection about my process. My eldest daughter already moved out to live her life with her boyfriend, soon husband. When my youngest daughter started to demand her freedom and space too my own presence transformed. My single fatherhood and harmony collapsed, just like the economized masculine care society collapses. My daughter reacts on my worries “why worry? I know my limits and get support for my safety from my friends”. In essence it is exactly what I claim with Sustainocracy in the participation society “we don’t want this (expensive) care and control from government, we take responsibility ourselves, together”. The whitepaper on the wellness-continuum-2 explains this societal transformation process.
Theory is great but the reality of letting go my caring mentality into a mentality of shared responsibilities appeared as an intense inner clash. Various female messengers appeared in my life to confront me in a very short time with my old masculine greed, my tremendous sudden emotional chaos and the emergence of the divine femininity as basis for a new phase of personal harmony based on genuine equality between men and women, masculinity and femininity.
Also in the sustainocratic processes I had been the masculine representation of masculine and feminine manifestation unified in me. If I wanted to let my processes grow I would have to let go of it and allow the equality appear between the emerging divine feminity and the redefinition of old, obsolete masculine dominance. After my clash with my self and the help of several women I became surrounded by literally 100’s of women. With each and all together I developed a relationship of love on a very special, deep and exciting energetic level. At first it was confusing, because it arose my natural sexuality and masculine desire to control. But the women were very clear to me: “we don’t need your care, we want your partnership, your transparant love and divine connecting overview over the emerging reality”. They give me their partnership, love and divine femininity in return to take their authentic place in the community and act as a consequence. Wow! What a great force started to deploy itself.
Genuine equality appeared and it was beautiful. Never in my life I had experienced this before. Not even in my two broken marriages. Now I was in the midst of it and broke through into the era of pure love, the emergence of a new phase of human life, the rebirth that I have been writing about for decades had become reality, including for me. The latter surprised me maybe most. Why me? Why this way? How will this evolve? What is expected from me when emotions hit the world? We will see. I let go and learned to go with the flow.
Three powerful lines of evolution defined themselves for progression in this field with our global movement:
Core human values: The core human values and sustainocratic processes had brought us to this stage of breakthrough. Our core values also developed our column of values which paint a strong contrast between the worlds.
People may use different names or references for it but in essence our new framework for societal evolution has opened up so much space that the divine femininity could manifest itself not only individually but now also in the collective group processes men-women, women-women, men – men. Our old masculine societal structures based on power, hierarchies and dependencies crumple. We don’t want them anymore. We seek the authenticity in people without prejudice or demand, just engagement in the development of our shared core human values. New relationships emerge based on this new energetic dimension of divine femininity, change, sustainable wellness and true equality. The letting go is manifesting itself with the comfort of new connectability in genuin wellness and proper equality for masculine and feminine energy forms that interact in their values driven potential. It is difficult for both to adjust to this new reality. The memory of the old is still powerfully present yet opening up for an intense dialog about relationships, sexuality, role models, rituals, cocreation, love, true values, healing pains, eliminating old impediments, daring, fears, progress, etc. The open dialogue and shared emotions helps us deal with this new reality. It feels good, powerful, caring for us all together and very lovable among eachother. A hugging and kissing type of society emerges in Sustainocracy as a phyical contrast to the old reality where we found it hard to say even hello or touch each other.
Healing: The biggest drama of where we come from is the enormous historic and often hidden surpression and abuse of (young) women, especially in this era of economized emancipation, perceived levels of equality and freedom. Men and women are educated to perform, to be docile, to be subordinate to economic securities and not express their emotions (except maybe our greed). The divine femininity was eliminated from our reality and replaced with individualism within hierarchies, sexual abuse and aggression, disconnected from the feminine roots through excessive masculine bureaucracies and economized care systems.
Within the City of Tomorrow divine feminine representatives now group together and make programs that help people (men and women, young and old) cross their line, deal with their own and collective chaos, heal, put their past in perspective and open up to divine feminity by breaking loose from fear, hate and anger. Emotions are allowed, shared and used to evolve into understanding, awareness, love and learning. To relate in a new way with masculinity without the old dogma’s, rules and limitations. Both men and women now need to evolve into this new relationship. Personal relationships have the tendency to fall back into old behavior. It takes guts, open, transparant dialog and experimentation with new experiences to progress. As a huge community we help each other while the field of energy grows every day.
Awareness and education: The breakthrough opens up to new awareness based formats and education. New products and technologies arise to help young women (and their mothers) develop their own divine feminine awareness. Being a woman is becoming very special, with its own initiation rituals around menstruation, sexuality, sense of self leadership and ownership. Intimate initiation workshops from girl to woman, the relationship with men in different stage of their lives, awareness of the body and its secrets, pleasures and care are introducing themselfs into society, our schools and neighborhoods. An entirely new educational format emerges in which the girls and women get to discover their entire divine femininity in all aspects of their being, their development and symbiosis with their surroundings.
My own role has transformed from initiator of sustainocratic processes to the connecting facilitator between impressive masculine and feminine forces within the context of social and societal innovation (COS3I). Huge circles of social inclusion in Sustainocracy are appearing where masculine and feminine expressions of music, art, craft, sport, entrepreneurship, care for core values, etc emerge, group together and start shaping society in a totally new way. And above all, the processes are being guided primarily by women. The next blogs will develop this further with examples of female partners with powerful awareness, experience and methods that have joined our core values driven movement, teaming up with me in the field of sustainable human progress and now make it a world wide process that goes far beyond the bounderies of myself.
The 21st century is unique in our history of entrepreneurship. Our entrepreneurial mission has transformed. Within the core human values driven democracy, referred to as Sustainocracy, we create innovative value continuously, together with a large diversity of partners. These innovations did not exist before because they address issues that have reached our awareness and need for change to produce sustainable human and societal progress. Once available they become of economic and political interest due to the trade-ability and transformative characterstics of each innovation in multiple formats and with many trade supporters. We have called this way of working the 4 x Value discipline since we ask ourselves four basic, values driven questions:
First: What does our entrepreneurship contribute to the wellness of the human being?
This is a difficult and transformative question. In our current care driven economies we try to make people dependent on services, social securities and technologies out of political or economic interests. Entrepreneurship is hence an economic instrument, not humanitarian even if we try to convince ourselves it is. As a consequence people become less alert, lazy, subordinate, disengaged and non-productive. We tend to take away their self reflection, creativity and wit to favor our own financial wellness. This is not the 21st century entrepreneurship.
Our entrepreneurship is not a money driven occupation, it is core human values driven, creative and meaningful. Collective self-sufficiency is a core human value in Sustainocracy in which people do meaningful things in and for the community that fullfill basic and general needs. So our entrepreneurship should help people be able to take responsibility for their own quality of life rather than taking it away from them. We then see their health, their engagement and productivity increase which is good for them, society and the economy. Our entrepreneurship is hence focused on helping people create their own wellness.
Second: How do we contribute to society?
Also this is a difficult one to answer. Who are we trying to please? In our current society the public dominance is mastered by political and economic interests. Our Sustainocratic foundation however is focused on our human values. This represents a different kind of accountability for both the citizens, governance and entrepreneurship. When the 5 core human values are respected than the society itself will be resilient to all kinds of issues. We therefor need to enhance society from a core values point of view, not political or economic. Then we see that politics and economics show interest and start relating to the sustainocratic values to sustain themselves and their initiatives. Which is good. So by being creative in the field of core human values we also gradually transform the political and economic discourse. We contribute to social cohesion, public engagement and political and economic management of wellness. In fact we created a leadership movement of change within a managed culture of political economic conservatism.
Third: How does our natural environment benefit?
Our current lifestyle and political economic steering produce pollution, destruction of our natural habitat and the restroing capabilities of our environment. In fact we are a parasite of our host, planet Earth. Our entrepreneurship is hence focused on turning this around to become a symbiotic partner of the environment of which we are part and of which we depend. How do we deal with innovation to take away, avoid and eliminate our polluting activities? How do we use natural resources in a cyclic way? What can we learn from our living environment that presents solutions which took over 4 billion years to evolve and often show must better results than whatever our human wit can come up with. Whatever we do in our entrepreneurial spirit it should not damage but heal and interact with our natural reality.
Fourth: How do we generate enough money as means for our continuity?
Within our entrepreneurial processes we distinguish two clear patterns. The first one is the creative part of thinking of meaningful innovations that make a difference within our Sustainocratic mission. Since we create something that cannot be bought, simply because it does not exist yet, we can only invest in our venture. As we use our 4xValue method to guide us we enter the path of other entrepreneurial members of society who have no business interests but do have societal or environmental challenges (government) or intellectual interest (universities) to deal with. Business partners are interested in participating to see if they can lay hands of the innovations to include them in their commercial activities as soon as they become visible and tangible. In this phase these partners invest money and their own talented contribution to effectively design our innovations. Money is a means here.
As soon as the innovations come to existence they have a number of properties that can be fragmented again among the participating partners: new products, services, policy modifications, new knowledge and experiences, educational values, etc. All these can be incorporated in economic patterns of social cost savings as well as business development. Each enlargement of the use of the innovations contributes to both the economic growth as well as the overall global change for resilience. Money is again a means to provide continuity through new investment patterns or the creation of an innovation fund (royalties or donations) for continuity of both the 4xValue processes as the continuous delivery of meanful entrepreneurship. Our innovative drive is therefore the main attractive force for the diversity of partners to participate with investment of resources and financial means.
4xValue as mirroring tool
We have now noticed that employees, stakeholders and investors start using the 4xValue criteria to see if the company they work for (or with) is producing integral value. If not than people ask themselves if they want to work there or invest in it? Salary or divident is often not enough anymore and people want to get reassurance of their own meaningful contribution to society and the multiple positive reciprocity of their engagement.
